Attendance at Summer Band is mandatory for all band students and color guard members. During Summer Band, members prepare for the upcoming marching season (mentally, physically, and musically).
Students must report with their instrument, full band water jug, good athletic shoes, lunch & snacks, their phone (w/UDB installed), and sun protection (hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, etc).
The dates and times for Summer Band is listed on the Marching Band Calendar as well as posted in the Band App.
There are several things a student should bring daily to Summer Camp:
Instrument with associated accessories (reeds, valve oil, lyre, flip folder)
FULL Water Jug
A mobile device with the Ultimate Drill Book (UDBapp) App installed.
Sun Protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, SPF shirts, etc)
Lunch/Snacks
A great attitude and an open mind to learn and grow.
Absoutely.
It is essential to have all students present at Summer Band. The foundations of the marching season are built and set during this time. Students will work on basic marching skills, learn/memorize their music, and work on the different formations for the show.
Summer Band builds musical skills, confidence, and lifelong memories. Students often report that surviving the heat and intensity makes them stronger musicians and marchers, preparing them for the marching season and competitions like UIL.
There are four (4) main areas students can focus on to prepare for Summer Band:
Physical Preparation- - Build Stamina for Texas Heat - Texas summers are hot (often 100°F+), and marching band rehearsals can last eight (8) hours daily. Gradually increase outdoor activity to acclimate to heat. Start with short sessions (e.g., 20–30 minutes) of walking or light exercise outside, wearing breathable clothing. - Hydrate...Hydrate...HYDRATE! Begin hydrating weeks in advance—drink water consistently throughout the day (not just during rehearsals). Ensure you have your issued half-gallon water jug during rehearsals to stay hydrated during long practices. Avoid sugary drinks or excessive salt. - Physical Fitness - Engage in light cardio (e.g., jogging, cycling) and stretching to build endurance and flexibility for marching. Core exercises help with posture and carrying instruments, especially for heavier ones like tubas/sousaphones or percussion.
Mental Preparation - - Prepare for a challenging but rewarding summer of growth. - If it were easy, we'd be in the orchestra.
Musical Preparation - - Practice your Instrument - Regularly practice your instrument to maintain and improve skills. Focus on fundamentals like scales, tone quality, and technique. - Memorize Music- Start memorizing marching band show music (if provided). This reduces stress during rehearsals and helps with multitasking (e.g., playing while marching).
Logistics - Prepare Supplies - Prepare essentials like your instrument, reeds, valve oil, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, comfortable athletic shoes, and appropriate clothing (black shorts and red t-shirts). - Install the Ultimate Drill Book App (UDBapp) on your mobile device. This will ensure you know your positioning on the field.
Great question! Yes. The Marching Arts is a physically demanding sport/activity. As such, before members can participate in any outdoor practice during Summer Band, they must have a Medical Physical completed and filed with the Director of Bands (9th and 11th Grade as well as any new 10th or 12th grade members). Find the KISD approved Physical Form here.
Additionally, members and parents must complete all requirements on the Killeen ISD Athletics Rank One portal.
